Tourism Stakeholders Address Air Corridor Disruptions at Maldives Tourism Intelligence Briefing

Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) hosted the Maldives Tourism Intelligence Briefing (MTIB) for the second quarter of 2026 on 21 April 2026 at Barceló Nasandhura, bringing together industry leaders, government representatives, and tourism stakeholders to assess the impact of ongoing disruptions in the Middle East air corridor and to coordinate immediate response strategies.

The briefing addressed the direct impact of these disruptions on global travel patterns and their implications for Maldives arrivals, particularly from key long-haul markets reliant on transit routes through the region. The session provided updated intelligence on booking trends, route adjustments, and forward-looking demand projections, forming a basis for industry-wide coordination.

Opening the session, Mr. Abdulla Ghiyas Riyaz, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Visit Maldives Corporation, highlighted the urgency of the current situation and the need for a unified industry response. He emphasised that "it is only through collective effort that we can stabilise and move forward."

The briefing featured presentations from key sector representatives, including Mr Paul Pruangkarn from the Pacific Asia Travel Association presenting on global travel disruptions, Mr Mohamed Hammad from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation outlining policy priorities, Ms Nashaya Abdul Wahid from Maldives Airports Company Limited discussing air connectivity trends, and Mr Nasrulla Adam from Visit Maldives Corporation presenting the revised market outlook.

A key component was the stakeholder feedback session, which emphasised positioning the Maldives as a safe and fully operational destination, diversifying target segments including high-yield private jet and premium travel, and increasing digital marketing efforts to maintain visibility across disrupted markets.

The discussions emphasised adaptive strategies, including strengthening alternative air connectivity options, maintaining consistent communication with travel trade partners, and aligning promotional messaging with current market realities.

The MTIB brought together over 100 participants from across the tourism sector, including government agencies, private sector operators, and industry associations. Visit Maldives Corporation reaffirmed the role of the MTIB as a critical mechanism for real-time intelligence sharing and coordinated response planning.
