Chairperson Abdulla Giyas calls for tourism diversification and accelerated reforms during Visit Maldives x PATA webinar

Abdulla Giyas, Chairperson of Visit Maldives Corporation, addressed a collaborative webinar with the Pacific Asia Travel Association on April 9, 2026, focusing on how Middle Eastern conflicts are reshaping global tourism patterns. The Maldives faces particular vulnerability due to its dependence on aviation connections through regional hubs.

Giyas emphasised the need for swift action, stating: "We have moved swiftly to stabilise connectivity, support travelers on the ground, and engage closely with our airline and industry partners." He highlighted opportunities in high-value segments including destination weddings, sports tourism, MICE events, and superyacht experiences.

Michael Shoory from Tourism Economics presented market analysis suggesting cautious optimism for Asia-Pacific tourism growth in 2026, while noting significant downside risks from geopolitical uncertainties. He recommended leveraging Chinese outbound tourism recovery and intra-regional travel expansion to offset disruptions.

The webinar featured guidance from industry experts on navigating fuel price fluctuations and changing traveller preferences. Participants included Sarah Mathews and Elizabeth Cook from E-Tourism Frontiers, addressing market targeting and crisis communications respectively.

The World Travel & Tourism Council estimates daily global tourism losses at approximately USD 600 million. Visit Maldives Corporation plans continued engagement through PATA Travel Mart, Travel Meet Asia, ITB Asia, and partnerships with airlines to sustain market confidence and drive sustainable growth.
