President Mohamed Muizzu has accepted the resignations of ten cabinet ministers and collapsed five ministries in the most sweeping reorganisation of the executive since his government took office in November 2023.

The reshuffle, announced at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, reduces the number of ministries from twenty to fifteen. The president said the restructuring would be followed by a new framework for public appointments based on qualifications and performance rather than political affiliation.

The change comes ten days after the government's constitutional referendum on joint elections was rejected 68.7 per cent to 31.3.
