The President's Office opened applications on Thursday for membership of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, filling a vacancy that arises as a sitting member's tenure approaches its end.

Submissions are accepted until noon on Monday 10 August, with forms — application, political-party registration check, consent letters and qualification records — available from the President's Office website. By law, HRCM members are appointed by the president with the approval of the Majlis.

The commission's composition has been contested ground under successive administrations, and this appointment lands in a charged season for oversight bodies: the president spent the same week publicly accusing the Information Commissioner of partisanship. Who is trusted with the human rights portfolio will be read accordingly.
