An extraordinary sitting of the Majlis passed the first reading of the constitutional amendment bill on synchronised elections late Sunday evening, the speaker said at a press conference. The Maldivian Democratic Party, which had walked out during proceedings, described the sitting as 'unlawful' and said it would challenge the manner of the call.
