Muizzu cancels meeting with US Ambassador Sergio Gor at the last minute
A quiet snub on a March visit; a message written in absence rather than in speech.
A scheduled meeting between President Mohamed Muizzu and Sergio Gor, the United States ambassador to India accredited also to the Maldives, was cancelled by the Maldivian side at the last minute on Monday. Officials at the President's Office gave no reason; Mr Gor completed his visit without a public appearance with the president.
In a press conference two hours later, Mr Muizzu reiterated that the Maldives will 'welcome leaders and senior officials of all countries, except for Israel.' The snub has been read in Washington and New Delhi as a marker of the country's drift toward the Muslim world in the second month of the Iran war.
