The war and us
A column on the Iran war and what it is doing to the Maldivian economy in real time.
We are an island nation that, from the point of view of oil and freight, is effectively a Gulf country. The war that broke out on 28 February has reached us through the fuel pump, the airline manifest, the hotel booking, the rupee, and the rufiyaa — in about that order.
The first instinct of a small economy in a large war is to flinch. Our instinct, for now, should be to plan.
