The Maldives' skipjack tuna fishery has received a country-specific sustainability rating from the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch programme — the first time the classification has been extended in this form to a single country's fleet.
Officials at the Ministry of Fisheries said the rating, which categorises the pole-and-line method as sustainable, was expected to raise prices paid to Maldivian exporters in the North American market and reinforce the country's long campaign for its fleet's status.
