Fire breaks out at T-jetty in Male
A fire broke out aboard a speed boat docked at the T Jetty in the capital city of Male' on Monday.
A police spokesperson confirmed that Fire and Rescue services were present at the scene immediately and managed to extinguish the fire within approximately an hour.
Although authorities have not yet disclosed an official cause for the second major fire incident in September, eyewitnesses state that the fire occurred while the speedboat was being refuelled by a bowser. They claim that the fire was sparked by a cigarette and that the flames quickly spread to nearby oil bowsers.
Ordinary citizens and crewmembers of vessels docked at the T-Jetty aided security forces to move vehicles away from the vicinity of the fire.
Seven individuals that sustained burns during the incident were taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for treatment.
The speedboat, reportedly registered at Ukulhas, Alif Alif Atoll, was damaged beyond repair and sank into the lagoon.
Several cargo ships, speedboats and oil bowsers are present at the T Jetty which is one of the capital's busiest ports.
Monday's incident occurred only 10 days after a major fire ravaged four warehouses and seven residential buildings in Henveiru Ward, killing one woman, displacing 400 individuals and incurring considerable financial damages.
