The United Nations has called for the investigation on the murder of the social media activist and blogger, Yameen Rasheed be up to the international standards.
The High Commissioner of Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein condemned Sunday’s stabbing saying that “killing comes in the context of what appears to be an upsurge in arrests and prosecutions of the political opposition.”
The 29-year-old was discovered on the stairwell of his residence of Maafannu Spatula in Male’ City with multiple stab wounds and was taken to the hospital where he died.
While the UN has asked that the investigation of murder be up to the international standards, Yameen’s family has requested the same.
In a statement issued yesterday, the parents of the victim requested the police and President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to allow experienced, international investigators to join the investigated to ensure a trusted outcome of the investigation.
And they thanked the President in their statement last night for expressing his concern and assuring full support to find the culprits.
Although no arrests have been made so far, at a press conference today, the Head of Crime Investigation Department and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abdulla Nawaz said that the crime was caught on video and the individuals involved have been identified.
