Despite suffering defeat in yesterday’s parliamentary election, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has pledged to remain steadfast in their commitment to holding the government accountable and safeguarding democratic principles.
With the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) securing a supermajority of 71 seats in the upcoming 20th People’s Majlis, interim results show MDP winning only 12 seats, compared to their majority in the 19th People’s Majlis.
In a released statement, MDP congratulated successful candidates and urged them to prioritize the welfare of the people while upholding democratic values. The party emphasized the importance of parliamentarians in holding the government accountable and expressed confidence that the newly elected members will fulfill this duty diligently.
Despite the setback, MDP remains resolute in its mission to ensure democratic governance and transparency in the Maldives political landscape.
