US includes Maldivian in terrorist list

The United States’ has imposed sanctions against a Maldivian after placing him in its list of terrorists.

Mohamed Ameen’s name has been included in The Department of the Treasuries Office of Foreign Affairs Control (OFAC)’s list of terrorists.

In a press release, the US Department of the Treasury stated that Ameen has materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial material and support for ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K) and that he is an ISIS-K recruiter who was actively engaged in leading ISIS recruitment through his close lieutenants.

It also states that Ameen is a recruiter and key leader for ISIS in Syria, Afghanistan, and the Maldives and that he used to direct terrorist fighters to Syria, but now sends them to Afghanistan.

Ameen had fled Maldives when authorities attempted to arrest him over the Sultan Park bombing in 2007 and was arrested in Sri Lanka and returned to Maldives in 2011. He is currently living as a free man in the country.
