InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau, a luxury resort developed in Raa Atoll by InterContinental Hotels and Groups (IHG), opened its doors to its first arrivals on Monday.

Attending the opening ceremony as the chief guest, Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed emphasised on the importance of promoting Maldivian culture and traditions in expanding the tourism sector.

Minister Waheed acknowledged the resort's efforts in promoting Maldivian artists and local talent, adding that InterContinental resorts will reflect the involvement of locals which make up 56 percent of the staff.

The resort, located only 35 minutes from Velana International Airport (VIA) via seaplane, boasts a total of 81 villas. These include over-water villas, beach villas and lagoon villas, each complete with their own private pool and terrace.

The resort also signed a partnership with Manta Trust pledging to protect and conserve the marine species.

The recent unveiling of 16 new resorts added a 4,200 bed capacity, placing the total bed-capacity of Maldives at 72,000. 140 resorts are currently being operated across the archipelago famous for its white sandy beaches, clear waters and unique marine life.
