According to the statement, the donation is part of India's aid scheme to the Maldives and was agreed upon during the visit of the late Sushma Swaraj, then Minister of External Affairs of India, in March 2019.
The Foreign Ministry noted the importance of installing proper street light systems to ensure public safety and security in Kolhufushi, especially for women and the elderly. Likewise, 115 street lights will be installed in residential areas of the island under this project.
Indian embassy in the Maldives, via Twitter, said that it is "proud" to partner with the Maldivian government to install streetlights in Kolhufushi.
