Govt seeks to restore Supreme Court bench to 7 justices

The government on Monday submitted an amendment to the constitution, proposing to increase the number of justices on the Supreme Court bench to seven, including the Chief Justice.

The first reading of the bill took place during Monday's parliament session.

Member of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Azim, who represents Henveiru Central constituency, lodged the submission on behalf of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.

Highlighting that the Judicature Act was amended in 2014 for politically motivated reasons to dismiss two judges, the submission detailed that the bill was proposed to restore the number of judges on the bench to its former count.

The then-Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain and Judge Ahmed Muthasim Adnan were removed from the bench following the amendment in 2014, reducing the number of judges on Supreme Court's bench to five.
