COVID-19 cases rise to 574

Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Wednesday, confirmed an additional COVID-19 case, increasing total infections to 574.

HPA announced in a tweet that as of 11:30 am, one additional case had been confirmed; a Bangladeshi national.

The biggest one-day spike in new cases had been recorded on April 30 with 191 cases, but new cases since then have been significantly lower. 22 new cases were reported on Tuesday.

The health authorities are currently conducting active surveillance on 23 sites which house migrant workers who are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases such as COVID-19 due to their living situation.

Authorities have warned there was a high chance of discovering larger virus clusters during the course of the surveillance, stressing that the comparatively low virus numbers this week must not be used as a pretext to relax preventive measures.

While total cases have now risen to 574, Maldives recorded its second COVID-19 related fatality on Tuesday; a 33-year-old Bangladeshi man.
