148 employees leave Housing Development Corporation
Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Wednesday announced that 148 employees left the company.
Managing Director of HDC Suhail Ahmed revealed that certain employees out of 148 had resigned while the others were fired.
However, HDC also added that the dismissals were not made at the same time.
The majority of the employees that were fired consisted of security staff and workers that were assigned to monitor areas around reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.
HDC had hired 150 employees in time for the Presidential Elections held last year. According to rumours spreading at the time, the average salary for employees was MVR 8,000 and HDC was spending more than MVR 1 million on salaries and allowances.
The company played an active role in former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's campaign. It was speculated that HDC funds were used to hoist Yameen campaign flags and provide refreshments to campaign members. One rumour alleges that HDC spent MVR 30 million for the campaign.
Efforts are currently underway to conduct an audit to investigate HDC's involvement in Yameen's campaign.
HDC assures that all fired employees received notice in accordance with company regulations.
