An angry mob forced Minister of Environment, Energy and Water Ahmed Abdulla out of Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaal Atoll on Friday evening. Abdulla, who is also one of the two members representing Haa Dhaal Atoll in People’s Majlis (Parliament), was meeting with the youth of the island when frustrated islanders approached him about failure to keep promises of a sewerage system for the island. Soldiers from Maldives National Defence Force will start patrolling the streets of Male’ to curb the growing street violence, MNDF said on Monday in a press conference. Major Ibrahim Afzal from MNDF told reporters that the government has requested MNDF to intervene to stop the street violence which has left a 15-year-old boy in a coma at Intensive Care Unit of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Afzal said MNDF will be working to control the violence and that police will be involved in the investigation phase. Read more →

The police told the press on Monday that they have arrested eleven people concerning the attack. Nine of them are Maldivians while the other two are foreigners. The police did not specify the nationality of the foreigners but it is believed that they are Bangladeshis. The police confirmed that there was a minor among the arrested and that all arrested people are male. Read more →

Two British tourists may have to be evacuated after sustaining serious injuries on Saturday in the first-ever bomb blast in the Maldives. The attack which was targeted at tourists has left at least 12 tourists injured. Among the injured are 8 Chinese, 2 Japanese and 2 British citizens. Read more →

Tension remains high on streets of Maldives capital Male’ after the police cracked down on a demonstration organized by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
MDP was protesting against alleged vote rigging in the recent referendum held in the country to determine a system of government for the Maldives. MDP was campaigning for a parliamentary system of government but the official results claimed the referendum’s outcome favoured a presidential system. Read more →

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has unilaterally decided to call off its November 10 assembly to accelerate constitutional reform. At around 16.00 local time on Thursday, the party announced that it was canceling the demonstration due to fears that the Government would “impose an extreme crackdown on demonstrators” if it were to be held.
